The little things

Happy Summer!

I can't believe that summer is already halfway over!  Since so much has happened since the last time I've written anything, I'm going to try a new format to give some quick updates.

1.  After years of taking online classes through Austin Community College, I'm happy to announce that I finally graduated with my Associate of Arts Degree in Journalism.  I started taking classes at ACC in 2004.  Working full-time and going to school was never easy and it felt like I would never finish.  But with the support from J, Nathan and his parents, we finally did it.  Finishing school was truly a family endeavor.

So what's next?  I applied and was accepted to transfer to the University of Texas at the Permian Basin's communications program.  After doing a lot of research, I chose UTPB because they offer all courses online and they have an accelerated program.  I could have my bachelor's degree in less than two years.  But I'm not sure if I'm going to start classes in the fall because...

2.  I'm now a stay-at-home mom.  At least for now.  I know what you're thinking.  It seems counterproductive to get my degree to turn around and become a stay-at-home mom.  But I felt so frazzled from working and school for so long, that I felt that my brain needed a break.  J and I decided that it would be a good idea for me to enjoy the summer off with Nathan and then look for a new job once he goes back to school in August.  We are fortunate enough to be able to do this.  It has meant that we live on a tighter budget but we're okay with that.  We did it during our pre-Nathan days and Nathan's  happy as a clam that I'm home with him for the summer.  Now that I'm home, I've been able to catch up with friends that I couldn't see as often because of my work and school schedules.  I've also started volunteering at the Reveal Christian Resource Center's clothes closet through Hill Country Bible Church.  I love volunteering and again, due to having to work and school, I had no free time to do any volunteer work.  So I'm taking advantage of this time off to give back to my community.

3.  When we made the decision for me to quit working, I didn't know if we would be able to afford to go back to South Padre this year.  We hadn't even left the condo parking lot last year before Nathan started talking about our return trip this year.  J wanted to make sure Nathan still had a fun summer.  So J got creative to try and fund this year's trip.  When he was younger, he stored hoarded his childhood toys in his parent's attic.  He always envisioned playing with them with his own kid.  But once Nathan was able to talk, he told J he hated Star Wars, GI Joe and Transformers.  As sad as J was about this, he decided that there was no need to hold onto the toys anymore.  The area in our closet that was once my purse shelf, has now become the staging area for J's merchandise.  This is a better alternative to the kitchen island where they once lived.

Through his sales, he was able to fund this year's beach trip.  Seeing him sell off his toy collection to pay for our trip made me realize and appreciate how selfless he is.  He's always doing whatever it takes to make sure that Nathan is happy.

So far, this summer has been all about about rest, relaxation, reflection and reconnection to the people and things that are important to me.  This summer has given me an opportunity to slow down and enjoy the little things and appreciate them that much more.  I hope you are able to enjoy your summer however that may be.  Talk to ya'll soon!

Hi!

I'm a 35 year old working, running and shopping (not necessarily in that order) mom living in the burbs surrounding the beautiful city of Austin with my husband, our very active 5 year old and our rescue dog Buddy. This blog is my little space of the internet where I let my ADD run loose and I blog about...anything.
